Okay, we know Willy was freed a long time ago. Just needed a catchy headline. But think about poor 'ol Willy. When you do, they will be able to determine what kind of debt management program you need.

Afraid of the cost? Then shop around! That's what the Internet is for. It's a lovely place to surf and compare various debt management services. Heck, you can even do a search for free debt management and see what you get. There are likely plenty of options available. But that begs the question--are free debt management really free? In a word, no. In several words, "there's no such thing as a free lunch." Yeah, it's a bit misleading to advertise free debt management if it's not really free, but what it usually means is that some portion of the service is free, which could be anything from free credit counseling to your first month's fee being free. Usually it's an introductory offer of some sort.

There's another popular saying you might be wondering about: "You get what you pay for." Does that mean with a free debt management program, you won't get results? That all depends on the research you do on the company ahead of time. You may have heard of disreputable debt management companies that take your money and run. But you can find that in free debt management programs, non-profit companies or for profit companies. To avoid this, avoid companies that:

To avoid being scammed by a perceived debt management solution, look for companies with the Better Business Bureau's seal of approval. Fill out a bunch of the online forms that most of these companies provide on their websites. Within 24 hours, you'll get recommendations you can compare. Narrow it down from there and start making calls. How do they sound on the phone? Do their solutions seem viable and realistic or too good to be true? You made a mistake by getting into debt, but that doesn't make you stupid. You can certainly figure out what companies seem reputable. If nothing else, consult the Department of Justice's website. They have a list of recommended companies. Who knows? Some of them might even be free debt management companies!
